The Bison Observatory

CLIENT: Downtown Boston Alliance
PROGRAM: Winteractive
LOCATION: Downtown Boston, MA

Public art has the ability to transform a familiar place into something unexpected. When the Downtown Boston Alliance invited us to create a centerpiece installation for their annual Winteractive program, we saw an opportunity to bring a bit of mystery and wonder to the heart of downtown Boston.

The Bison Observatory introduces “Bo,” a hand-built wooden bison researcher who has taken up temporary residence in Winthrop Square. Perched beside a retrofitted observatory trailer outfitted with telescopes, antennas, and communication equipment, Bo appears to be carefully monitoring the skies — perhaps in response to a curious rocket that has mysteriously appeared overhead.

The installation merges sculpture, storytelling, and functional design. The observatory trailer was fully built out with a custom interior and service window, allowing the piece to operate not only as a visual landmark but also as an activated gathering space. Throughout the winter, visitors were invited to approach the trailer to receive warm drinks, learn about Bo’s ongoing investigations, and experience the installation as both a work of public art and a place to gather.

The project extended beyond the physical installation. In the months leading up to its arrival, we created an online narrative documenting Bo’s travels and investigations through a dedicated Instagram account, gradually hinting that his journey would lead to Boston. Shortly before the installation was revealed, a large rocket quietly appeared on a rooftop overlooking Winthrop Square — sparking curiosity across the city as people began to speculate about its purpose. A week later, Bo arrived below.

By blending handcrafted sculpture, narrative storytelling, and an element of urban mystery, The Bison Observatory transformed a downtown plaza into a temporary outpost of curiosity — inviting people to look a little closer at the city around them, and perhaps a little further into the sky.
